How can a WSI assess the effectiveness of their teaching methods?

Gathering feedback from students and observing progress is an effective way for a Water Safety Instructor to assess their teaching methods. This approach allows the instructor to gain insights into student comprehension and engagement in a more holistic manner. Engaging students in conversations about their experiences and understanding helps instructors identify areas where their teaching may need adjustment. Additionally, observing student progress in skill acquisition and confidence levels during lessons provides direct evidence of the teaching methods' effectiveness.

Formal tests after every lesson might not accurately reflect the progress made, as testing can create pressure and may not capture the students' practical skills and understanding in real-time. Focusing solely on the lesson plan limits the instructor's ability to adapt to the dynamics of the classroom and the needs of the students, which is crucial for effective teaching. While asking students to rate instructors on social media can provide some insight, it does not offer the immediate, direct feedback and observation that are essential for understanding the effectiveness of teaching methods in a structured learning environment.
